Tweet This gets an upgrade

By Richard X. Thripp at 2008-09-11T10:38:24Z in News, with these tags: bookmarking, connections, fun, networking, social, tweet this, twitter, 0 Comments. 107 words.

I’ve released version 1.1.1 of Tweet This, and upgraded everyone here. Now, the post title appears in the Twitter post box when you click any of the links around Thripp.com and DaytonaState.org.

Also, you can configure or disable Tweet This on your blog by going to Settings > Tweet This. You get the same config page that you would on your own WordPress installation, which looks like this:

This version caches URLs, so your Thripp.com blog will load faster now. You can change the URL service (several are available, including TinyURL) for your blog, restrict links …

I’ve created a WordPress plugin called Tweet This, which lets your readers share any of your posts on Twitter by clicking an icon that looks like a bird. It’s active on all Thripp.com and DaytonaState.org blogs! Try it out with the buttons here.

What’s your blog worth?

2008-10-08 Update: I removed this feature because it doesn’t work right as the comment count increases… I’ll have to change the math behind it some time.

I’ve added a value metric in the sidebar of every blog! Also, there are stats on the average number of words per post, number of tags and categories, and the number of threaded comments and pingbacks.

My blog is worth $829,191. This development blog is worth $7189. Daytona State College News is valued at $2440. VicAndHelen.com is a measly $15. My mom’s blog is worth $1270, while my cousin’s is just …

Revamped ShareThis tool

By Richard X. Thripp at 2008-07-19T19:48:02Z in News, with these tags: blogs, community, connections, pages, posts, sharing, social, 0 Comments. 63 words.

I switched from the new version to the ShareThis Classic version, which opens a new page like this instead of a JavaScript pop-up. I like the new design a lot better because it’s more clean an intuitive. Now, the ShareThis link for all your posts and pages is next to “Printable Version,” instead of being floating above it which didn’t make sense. Enjoy.

Friends, Subscriptions, and Comment Tracking, oh my!

By Richard X. Thripp at 2008-07-10T16:17:50Z in News, with these tags: authors, blogs, comments, community, connections, features, friends, networking, social, subscriptions, tracking, 3 Comments. 334 words.

I’ve implemented the features mentioned in my entertaining title. Finally!

friends-01

That’s what your sidebar looks like when you’re logged in. And that’s when you’re reading ANY blog. Very convenient, and it makes it hard to get lost. Before, there was just Site Admin and Log Out, but this is so much cooler. Clicking “Subscribe” adds the blog you’re reading to your subscribed list, which you can read in your admin panel. If you’re subscribed, the link changes to “Unsubscribe” (should you want to do that).

When you’re in your administrative section, you see this under “Dashboard”:…

Testing a Friends Feature

By Richard X. Thripp at 2008-07-10T05:19:15Z in News, with these tags: blogs, connections, social, thripp.com, 0 Comments. 141 words.

I’m testing a friends feature now. When you’re logged in, the admin bar outside the administrative area is different; the left part is to track your friends and the comments you’ve made. You can add people to your friends list to see their latest posts under Dashboard > Friends Blogs (rather than going to each blog), and you can put your friends list in the sidebar from Design > Widgets. I’ve done that here. Also, browsing while logged in is different; you can write a post from any page, even another blog, from the administrative bar at the top …

Comments link added to post headers

By Richard X. Thripp at 2008-06-09T03:26:36Z in News, with these tags: comments, community, links, posts, social, 0 Comments. 99 words.

I noticed on really long posts, like my latest, How to give file names to your photos, that the comments link is way down at the bottom of the entry, and that is annoying if you want to see the comment count right from the start, or jump to that section immediately. So I added a link in the header of each post, after the tags. You won’t see it when viewing just the post; it only appears on pages with multiple posts, like your home page, category and tag pages, etc. That’s where it’s most useful. Enjoy.

Hello, social bookmarking

By Richard X. Thripp at 2008-06-09T01:57:05Z in News, with these tags: collaboration, community, sharing, social, 0 Comments. 123 words.

Check this out: every post and page across the thripp.com network has a “ShareThis” button at the bottom:

sharethis-01

Click it, and in a few second, this screen pops up:

sharethis-02

This lets you share any post you come across with ease, on the major social networks or by email. Thanks to the ShareThis plugin for the feature; it works fine in Wordpress MU when dropped in the mu-plugins folder. I have a lot of posts at Brilliant Photography by Richard X. Thripp which …

Comments Tracking

By Richard X. Thripp at 2008-06-03T10:27:13Z in News, with these tags: comments, community, logging, networking, social, tracking, 0 Comments. 191 words.

I added the WPMU User Comment Tracking and Display plugin, which from now on will keep a log of the comments you make. You can see them in the admin page under Dashboard > My Comments. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), it shows just the latest three comments from the post you commented on, so it isn’t a true comments history. At least you’ll know you commented there, so you can click the title of the post and then use your web browser’s Find function to find your user name in the comments list. …

Tech board in forum

By Richard X. Thripp at 2008-06-03T08:36:49Z in News, with these tags: community, forum, social, talk, technology, 0 Comments. 75 words.

I added the tech board to the forum Here’s the description:

Talk about computers, iPods, gadgets, software, HTML, PHP, programming. Anything about computers, simple or advanced.

It’s a good place to talk about any of that, as the subject surely grows. If you haven’t gone to the forum, you should; you can talk about photography, the site, or anything else, and it shares user accounts with thripp.com. It has a nice design, and even guests can post.
